Friends,
The CDC states that “at the same time, the harms attributed to closed schools on the social, emotional, and behavioral health, economic well-being, and academic achievement of children, in both the short- and long-term, are well-known and significant. Further, the lack of in-person educational options disproportionately harms low-income and minority children and those living with disabilities. These students are far less likely to have access to private instruction... and care and far more likely to rely on key school-supported resources like food programs, special education services, counseling, and after-school programs to meet basic developmental needs.”
What can you do:
1. Email your School District Superintendent and School Board members about your desire for school to remain open. There are more public health issues beyond COVID; learning outcomes, lack of childcare for working parents, spikes in neglect/abuse in homes, mental health, etc. Being back in the classroom has proven to be the most effective way for our children to learn.
2. Email Oregon Public Health and local Health Districts to let them you would like to have school remain open. The metric they are using to establish their risk levels are based on unreliable data. They are using active cases to rate each of the four levels. The testing for active cases is inaccurate. It should be focused on the number of hospitalizations and number of deaths.

3. Email Gov. Brown and local representaive THIS ONE IS THE IMPORTANT ONE
urging her and local representatives to call for a special session to pass the
'liability shield" for schools and businesses to be able to re-open without the threat of lawsuit in the event that someone contracts COVID. THIS COULD CHANGE EVERytHING! if that law goes into place, they don't have to list to the Oregon Public Health Department (i.e. they won't need to prove that they are in compliance with the local Health Dept guidelines in order to be protected from lawsuits). And it will cover both schools and small businesses! This kind of burden should not be placed on anyone, whether someone gets sick or not. This fear of threatening lawsuits and liabilities for diseases that are beyond the scope of what they regularly do every day.
